VALUABLE COLLECTION
Most of the collection of art equipment presenter to Victoria University College by the Carnegie Corporation has already arrived and is being unpacked. Some of the 230 volumes and 2200 reproductions of famous works of art which make up the collection were shown to members of the college council last evening, and were highly praised, it being agreed that the college was exceedingly fortunate in receiving such a generous and magnificent gift It was decided to send a letter of thanks and appreciation to the president of the Carnegie Corporation, Dr, F. M. Keppol, who" is to visit New Zealand shortly. The collection, which is valued at about £1000, deals with all phases of art through the ages, as will be seen from the following headings under which the volumes are listed: Histories and books of general interest; ancient aft, 3000 B,C. to 500 A.D.; medieval art 500 A.D. to 1500 A.D.; Renaissance ' art, 1500 to 1800; modern art, 1800 to the present day; Oriental art, the Near and Far East; primitive art; aesthetics and technique; arts and crafts; costume; furniture; landscape design; ornament; prints; textiles and rugs; and the theatre. There are two other similar collections in New Zealand, one at Auckland University and the other at Canterbury College. Both were presented by the Carnegie Corporation, which has also given three smaller art equipment collections to high schools in New Zealand. Special arrangements are to be ,jnade for the housing of rthe collection at Victoria College. The college has already received the first of the five instalments of 5000 dollars offered in addition by the Carnegie Corporation for the purchase of library material. This offer has also been made to the other three universities in New Zealand." ■■'■:■■■"'■■
