BOMBERS SUCCESSFUL

The test air raids began last night, when 180 bombing 'planes flew towards the capital and a similar number of defending fighters, aided by searchlights, anti-aircraft batteries, and the Civilian Observers' Corps, sought to waylay and destroy them. The raiders' chief objectives included the Air Ministry and the "seat of the! Government of the Northland." ! A communique stated: "Bomber for-' mations were picked up and reported by the observer corps, upoiv which eight fighter squadrons wore dispatched to intercept them. The raiders bombed seven targets.'? The Air Ministry's report reveals that the Southland bombers were largely successful. Squadrons attacking the Air Ministry, 'West India Docks, stores, and depot at Kidbrooke. were not intercepted, but the , squadron bombing Dagenham was roughly handled. Four out of seven targets in the London area were' hit. Thirty-nine raids were carried out by individual 'planes in tho -second phase of the attack, of which thirty-three were intercepted. - Twenty-nine hits were recorded. The Southland bombers attacked, aerodromes with good results in the third phase.
