TURF NEWS IN BRIEF
The first acceptance for the main events at the' Grand National Meeting, also entries for the minor events, close at 8 o'clock;-cm. Friday evening. Racing men will .-regret to hear of the serious indisposition o£ Mr. W. H. Ballinger, one of the most popular figures on the Dominion Turf. Mr. Ballinger became ill after attending the final day of the recent Wellington- Meeting. Billy Boy and Cargen, the last', of'the visitors remaining at Trentham, were to have gone south to Biccarton by this evening's ferry. 'Both have'done particularly well during the last week. Eacegoers are probably waiting to see how Billy Boy schools over the Eiccarton fences this year, particularly that kennels double. However;1 according to his trainer (R. W. A. Lewis) he is not going to jump the Eiccarton country'till National day. Cargen's complete failure at Trentham was puzzling to those who have seen him racing at his best. Possibly the going'or the light was not to his liking. Ho has not done any serious work since the meeting^ but he has left for the south looking a picture of health. It is possible that Cargen will have a change of riders at Eiccarton, and in this event A. Hobspn> will be .on him. Hobr son has not brought home a'wintier yet in his four "rides since his resumption, But he just missed once" on Vitapbpne. Vitaphone will also be .'one of; his mounts in the south. A southern-message states that Kemal Pasha and a Paper Money gelding in the same ownership will probably join A. E. Didham's stable for next season's racing. An early' withdrawal from the. Winter Gup was Cottesmore, who was scratched at 0 a.m. on Saturday." Not mucli hope is held of this brilliant gelding's racing again. After producing a colt to Nightmarch, the Songbird mare Bellbirq is again in work at Wingatui. .She appears to be doing a cup preparation, says the Dunedin critic "Sentinel." , G. Young has. registered colours similar to ■, Gloaming's old colours for his own use in Australia. Hardly hail Manetho recovered from his leg injury when he contracted an internal complaint that has forced F. Christmas to put him aside again. This means his absence from his National engagements and probably ■ longer. - Verden has gone right out of favour for the Grand Nationalvas a.result of his poor exhibitions of; stamina at -the Wellington Meeting,'but a; soutnera1 writer says that he did "not travel 'well gind that better results can be expected "from him in his near-at-home' engagements next month. Polydora is again: in active work at Eiccarton! and she was givep an, easy'half-mile-sprint ..last Saturday. She has done no racing since last spring, her retirement coming on the eve of the New Zealand Cup, for which she was favourite at the time she dropped out. She h^s done a_lot of useful exercise, and, though she will not. be at her best next month, she only needs to train on to be a popular candidate for important events in the spring.
