Australia, Lott audSloofen (U.S.A.) defeated Crawford and Quist (Australia), 6-1, 6-4, 2(3, 6-4. Crawford mid Quist in the fust set woic unable to withstand the severity of the play of Stoefon, who served and smashed ferociously ,-iuiT rattled the Australians by 'pk-king open spots. In the second pot the long-limbed Stootei\ seemed everywhere along the net, made some bewildering interceptions, find won one .service game with a run of almct unsightablc aces. Quist played brilliantly in the third sot, while Stoefen fell into errors, netting drives. Australia, took the sot 'to the obvious delight of barely a thousand spectators. Crawford lost his opening service in the fourth sot to love. Stoefen follow- , ed suit and bad smashing by Crawford lost the Australians Quist's service. I The Americans led 4-3, the seventh game providing some dazzling rallies, in which Crawford usually, erred. Tho Australians levelled by again taking Stoefen's MM-vice 4--1. Crawford, double-faulting, lost tho ninth game and his short lobbing gave the Americans the tenth for set. :uid match. The Australians- fought valiantly. Quist was superior to Crawford, but tho Americans were too severe. Stoefen did many brilliant things, while Lott's generalship and steadiness were always evident. . In an exhibition game Turnbull and Ilopman defeated Shields and AVood, 3-6, 6-0, 0-4. In tho preliminary competition for the Davis Cup Poland eliminated Belgium 4 matches to 1. ■
