OBITUARY
MR. J. D. CIBB
The death occurred at Wellington "on Friday of Mr. J. D. Gibb, a native of Johnshaven, Scotland, in his Bath year. The late Mr. Gibb, who was a sailor in his young days, eaino out to New Zealand in the Nelson, mooting his future wife, Miss Littlejohn, on the voyage. After returning home in tho Nelson, he cam© out to New Zealand again in tho Canterbury, and in 1875, ho left his ship and went to Oamaru, where- ho was married. For several 5 years he worked, in.lreland aud Co.'s flourmills, and "then left Oamaru for Port Chalmers, where he was appointed master of the Edwin Fox, then engaged in the New Zealand coastal trade, no again sought employment ashore, and for a number of years worked at tho Pieton freezing, works. He retired some years ago. and went to Napier, but later settled in Wellington, where' he ' remained until, his death.' Tho lato Mr. Gibb, who was a fino example of the !'old school, of sailors, had a wide knowledgo of the ships of his time, and contributed information regarding the sailing1 ships'. Nelson, Canterbury, and Edwin Fox for Sir Henry Brett's'bookj "Whits "Wings." His wife predeceased him by- thirteen years. H© leaves ' two , sons, John, of . Wellington, and William, of Picton, eighteen grand-; children, and two' great-grandchildren;-1 The interment took place at Picton on Saturday.
