RELIEF WORKER'S ATTITUDE
DEMAND FOR RESTITUTION

"I can live on air, it seems, so fae as the local Labour Department is concerned," said Mr. Alexander Bennie. this morning when he gave a reporter details of the latest development in thenow well-known case in which the Unemployment Board has endeavoured to collect 2s Gd a week out of his relief worker's wage of 13s 6d a week.- ■''•■ Mr. Bennie said that when he called on Mr. E. T. Bailey,, officer in charge of the Christchureh Labour Bureau, this morning his request for work was refused and Mr. Bailey ordered him out of the office. ' " It will be recalled^tliat.last week Mr. H. P. Lnwry, S.M., .discharged Bennio stating that the Unemployment Board, by interference with a direction of the Court, had lost £56. ■ The. Magistrate referred in strong terms to the action of the-.board in demanding restitution from'relief,-workers irrespective of the directions of the Court. Mr. Eennio states that Mr. Baileyasked him on what terms he was pre-< pared to pay.back the £56 he owed the Department. Mr.- Eennie replied that he would make no terms, as according to the' Magistrate he owed nothing. Mr. Bailey refused to discuss the mat* ter with the reporter.
