EMPHATIC DENIAL

Au emphatic denial was : given t» day by the Minister of Commerce, Mr. •I1. H. Stewart, to published statements: that he had informed the Meat Advisory Committee at; Canberra Tester-1 day that the- Commonwealth Government had informed the British Government that if tho latter imposed-restric-tions on Australian ;xmeat Australia would retaliate bf the use of an-Aus-tralian tariff on British goods. ■
The Minister said that the negotiations had been conducted entirely on. the basis of Australia's under tho meat agreement concluded at Ottawa. He .deprecated £ho statement ■ that the cablegrams forwarded to the British' Government were strongly; worded, and stated that it was damaging to Empire relations to suggest that there haa been any departure from the courtesy which was traditional'in tha relationships between the British.< G6veminent and the Dominions.
