IN NEED OF HELP

VTo the Editor.)

Sir,—While it is recognised that there is some improvement in trade generally, and it is proposed to grant relief of payments by the employed on relief to the extent of 16s per annum, it should not be forgotten that there are thousands of business. and professional people who are gradually qualifying for unemployed relief, although it is the last thing they wish. Many business people are not doing sufficient turnover at a profit to pay their overhead expenses. The position of the middleclass people, who have been great contributors to taxation in the past, ie very desperate, and no one seems to care or offer any suggestions for assist ing them. The main privilege they have is subscribing towards the relief of primary producers through the high exchange. If- the Government would consider some assistance to these people by revising jt.ho list of superannuated servants holding other jobs and elimin ate either the second 30b or adjust the superannuation accordingly, cease giving Commission work to the same people when Commissions are appointed, eliminate by Act of Parliament married women: workers where husbands are earning a living wage, also women from being appointed to positions which should be left for men, some assistance'could be given at once. Could not the Unemployment Act be altered so that worthy people be assisted without having to spend the whole of their savings before being entitled to pick and shovel work? If' primary producers can -be assisted while in their own sphere of work, surely something conld be: done for this other body of people who are the trunk, of the- body politic, if -not.the backbone.—l am, etc., r. ~- _ , EQUITY.
