DIVING FEATS
While investigators! are exploring the higher reaches : of f the atmosphere, others are as1 eager to increase the depth to which divers may descend into the sea. The" fact: that two years ago American eeientists reached a depth of 1000 ft does not apply, since they used a.steel sphere from which they could not operate, but. only, observe. Becently, however, two Italian divers, wearing;a new type of diving suit, reached the record depth of 1181 ft. Tho suits that the divers wore were designed. for the purpose of salvaging a cargo , of'tungsten and, other valuable metals, sent.to the bottom of the Mediterranean in the British steamer Glenartney: in the course of the war and which lies 750 ft below the surface! Though these Italian divers'reported that visibility was surprisingly good at nearly 1000 ft, when the Italian ship Briarco' undertakes this salvage operation a lamp of 25,000 eahdle-powor Will be used to light the ocean bed. It is possible that many strange facts may come to light concerning the denizens of these depths. ,
