AUSTRALIA AT SHEFFIELD COUNTY BATS ON WET WICKET LONDON, July 14. Hie match, Australia v. Yorkshire was commenced at Sheffield today, the county team having first strike; on a wicket sodden from heavy raiii earlier in the week as well as from a fall diii> ing last night. Yorkshire, who won the toss, had. made 238 runs for six wickets when stumps were drawn for the day. The teams are:— . ' Australia: Woodfull, Brown, Bradman, MeCabe, Bromley, Barling, Barnott, Ebeling, Grimmett, Wall, • and Meetwood-Smith. Yorkshire: Sellars, Sutcliffe, 'Mitchell, Barber,. Ley land,. Turner, Verity, Smailcs, Maeaulay, Bowes, and AVood. Wall and Ebeling were unable-to extract life from . the dull pitch, which quickly became pockmarked. Half an hour's treadmill toil produced eight runs. Suteliffe was an early victim when. Fleewood-Smith made a brilliant tlirow-in-froni deep square-leg. Barnett did the rest. ' The batsmen were rather severe on . Bromley. The score at the luncheon adjournment was 34 for one wicket., . There were 20,000 present after lunch, and they had little to applaud. Mitchell .lifted'/Grimmett 'for two 4's, and was then bowled round his legs. Grimmett worried Barber, who made two mistakes before he was stumped. The total reached 100 in 13a minutes. The wicket was now a mudhoap, and there was no sun to make it really difficult. Leyland made a quiet start. Then he drove ;Wall to the boundary and- Grimmett twieo for 4 in one over. He also punched labeling. three times to the boundary, but in reattempting the stroke at 38 skied the ball, which Woodfull badly misjudged, though other fieldsmen had a better chance of catching it. Ebeling got Turner with an in-swinger, and in the next over lie. had Leyland snapped up at the wickets when the batsman-failed with an attempt at an off-drive. Leyland hit seven.4's.,- .' . . • ~ ■ The weather was bright and windy after tea. Bromley, who came on at 161, had Verity easily caught at first slip. The-wicket was now definitely aiding the bowlers, but .the batting continued to be stubborn. Sellars became aggressive, and hit confidently against Wall and Ebeling, He and Smailes succeeded in placing Yorkshire in a sound position, adding 74 in 70 minutes,, an excellent performance under the difficult conditions. . .
