HUTT FULLY EXTENDED
A magnificent penalty goal from five yards outside half-way by Lynch and a field goal by Spencer provided JSntt with their winning points against Petone, each side scoring two tries. The final score was 13 to 8 in Hutt's favour, but a better indication of the run of the play would have been given if the margin had been only a point, as was the case in the first round. Played on the Petone Oval in the presence of easily the biggest crowd for the ground this season, the game resolved itself into a strenuous forward struggle with occasional pieces of bright play by the backs._ ' Petone rose to the occasion in fine style, with the result that Hutt were extended to the utmost and some exciting football of a high standard produced. Killeen,. wh6 was nursing an injured ankle, acted as an emergency for Hutt, but otherwise the teams were at full strength. ' The teams were:—
Hutt. —Jarman; Nees, Hanseu, Feeney; Lilburne, E. Neal;. Spencer; Lynch, Coulston, Wetherly, .Peck, Barry, Roberts, S. Neal, and Stevenson.
Petone.—Pollock; MeGnrk, Stirling, Peterson; Hudson, O'Halloran; Coman; Sciwood, Lambotirn, iStind-jren, Howe, Martin, Reid, Beban, and Abrim.
The 'winning of the toss enabled Hutt lo have the bright sun at their backs in the first spell, but in spite of this advantage they were unable to make much impression on their opponents. With most of the play in neutral territory, there was no scoring during the first hnlfhour. Hutt then opened- their account as the result of a-.jiacy run by-Hanson, who shot between Hudson and Stirling and scored near tho corner. Five minutes before half-time Hutt started a passing movement near their own line and,
after the whole line of backs had handled, l'oeney capped a fine piece of play with a try. Petone responded strongly, and just before the interval Beban forced his way over for a try, making the half-time score Hutt 6, Petone 3. Early in the second spell Petone took the lead throiHi a try between the posts by O'Halloran following a loose movement, Coman converting. Shortly afterwards Abrira was replaced by Can-. ■ The position remained unaltered till a quarter of an hour from the finish, when Lynch surprised everybody by kicking a goal from CO yards out in front of the posts. Spencer soon added a field goal, but most of the succeeding play was in Petonc's favour and once Carr was almost across for a try near the posts.
Mr. J. Moffitt was the referee.
