Although he was ndt_ yet in a position to make a definite statement, the Minister said that as fat as ho could see it would be neces-sai-y: to begin training teachers' again next year to meet the requirements of 1037. In-two or three months' time lie would oUtain a further report from the boards in regard to the available supply of teachers, and on receipt of this he would make a definite announcement, ' ' In'the mean time, he wished to sny tli'at if training were- undertaken again next year he proposed to admit direct to.training college a number of division A. students. Those would be selected-from tho best qualified of the available applicants who held a pass or a partial pass in the training college entrance examination, without any restriction in regard.to the year in which they gained the examination qualification.- They would receive two years' 1 raining in college, an d in the subsequent year serve as probationary as-»istants-in the schools. In addition, he proposed to admit a small number of division C (gradtiate) students, who would remain in college for one year and then se^ve for another year as probationary assistants. ■ No division B (paying) or'division D (short course) students would be admitted next year.
