"NOTHING BUT A WOLF"
THE ALSATIAN DOG
VIEWS OF FARMERS
Reference to the amount of damag«, particularly in respect to sheep-worry-ing, done by Alsatian dogs, was mada at the meeting of the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union today. After , considerable discussion, the following remit was passed:— ' That the Dog Registration Act ba amended to provide that the tax oa all working dogs be left entirely in the hands of local bodies, and that the tax on Alsatian, or German, shepherd dogs be £5 per dog. • . Mr. L. Hammond (Marton) said that! the matter was becoming very serious, particularly in the sheep areas. The Alsatian was being crossed with other breeds, and that was where the danger lay. 1 It was pointed out by another jnemJ ber that in one., district in the North' Island five hundred sheep on one farm were worried in one night. Other ■ farmers had had a similar experience. Mr. J. E. Benson (Poverty Bay) said that the Alsatian was nothing but a wolf. In Australia the dog was being crossed with dingoes, and,it.was difficult to know what the result would be.
