AUCKLAND CRITICISM
"COLLAPSE OF THE TRADE"
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, -This Day. "The Meat Board's ban on boneless beef or bobby calves has created consternation in the trade in Auckland," stated a man who is prominent in the trade. "Without a word of warning the Government has kicked a stool from under us, and at one blow a vast organisation has been affected. Slaughtermen, freezing employees, those dealing in by-products, yardmen,; and thoso in the field with motor-trucks will all suffer. It will mean a, tremendous' loss to the railways at a time when there is very little other livestock moving."
Last year this trade was worth £100,000 to the Auckland Province, and the opinion is expressed that the ban means the collapse of tho trade, and that bobby calves will now bo dealt, with as in the old days: they will be killed on the farm, the skins removed, and tho carcasses fed to the pigs. Tho bobby calf season has only just started, and it was expected that it would be larger than last season, iortunately the season for boneless beef is almost over, but unless tho ban is removed or modified tho loss of this export trade will also be serious. Those associated with the trade in Auckland are at a loss to understand the reason tor the ban, and until information is available are disinclined to commit themselves to criticism.
