RESTORATION OF CUTS
IMPOSSIBLE AT PRESENT
LOWER HUTT COUNCIL EMPLOYEES
Last December Councillor J. E. Napier moved that the Lower Hutt Borough Council should restore the 10 per cent, salary cut to its employees. As there appeared to be every chance of the motion being defeated Councillor Napier asked1 that the matter be considered later when the estimates were before tho council.
During the time when the council was considering the estimates in committee Councillor Napier again introduced tho question, but failed to get a seconder to his motion. At last evening's meeting, of the council he complained that the report of the committee did not refer to his motion. After some discussion the Mayor (Mi\ J. W. Andrews) asked Councillor Napier to make a statement of his position.
Councillor Napier said that he considered the council should have restored the 10 per cent, cut, which would have cost only £1030; at the least it might have restored 5 per cent., which would have cost only £515. The amount could have been saved out of street maintenance.
The Mayor, said Councillor Napier, by keeping the rate down, had 'killed any chance of restoring the cuts this year. If the rates had been higher it might have been found at the end of the year that the council had saved enough to enable at least part of tho cut to bo restored, but that was not possible now. Mr. Andrews said he was sure every councillor was sympathetic towards restoring tho cuts, but it was not possible to do anything at present.
