PARTY GOVERNMENT

, (To. the Editor.) Sir,—Referring- to Mr. I\. A. Wright's attack oti the party system of govoinmont, there is little doubt that it is an uutiquated system and it lias more than outlived its usefulness. Possibly when it was first introduced it was a great advance on what the mass" of the people hud been fuxiistomed to, but that is v long time ago and the world hns advanced. It always appeals to me most unaccountable that any mass of voters or any individual will yo.tc for a candidate for,.the simple reason that he or she is called a Reform, Labour, or a'United candidate. To my idea a member of Parliament should be elected on his ability, his grasp of public life, and his charitableness of outlook, to his- fellow-moii. If lie has not some of those attributes of what account is it what name.he calls himself? Any system of government which rests on /rash yzomiscs of what candidates will do if elected is. uu.sound. Such promises, are usually made- for electioneering purposes and to play on- the gullibility-of-tho electors. All parties we "-much tho same. Ono would liko'to; think that '■ in this enlightened and democratic, age it was possible to got a few.men (not necessarily 70 or 80) who could,be trusted to put country bofore party and who would put self in the background. Wo are living in a new ago and require new methods. Most thinking people "will agroe with Mr. R. A. Wright that most if not all of tho ills we arc suffering from at the present time are the result of the party' system of government.—l- am, fet'i.,,::

G. ■-ANDERSON,
