TREE-PLANTING
THE STATE PROGRAMME
'Details of the State Forest Service tree-planting programme for the 1934 season were announced today by the Commissioner of State Forests (the Hon. E. A. Bansom).
. "For the ensuing planting season arrangements are now in hand for the phmting of a: total of 23,900 acres with various exotic species," said Mr. Eansom. '^Operation will be confined principally to the Kaingaroa State plantation, Botorua district, where the bulk of the land available for planting is situated, and the planting of approximately 20,000 acres which is surveyed and otherwise prepared is projected. .
"The next planting project in importanee is situated'in the Nelson district where tho planting of an area of approximately 1550 acres at the Golden Downs State plantation •is planned. At the Tairua State 'plantation situated to the north of Waihi, Auckland district, it is proposed to plant approximately 750 acres. Twelve other planting projects covering areas varying from 5 to 400 acres, and in the aggregate totalling some 1600 acres, widely. distributed in both the North and South Islands, are also provided for in. the planting programme. in the : early stages of plantation establishment certain blanking is of course necessary, and this activity will also receive attention at tho plantations concerned during the ensuing season. It is. difficult to forecast the. labour requirements to 'carry . out this programme, but in view of the experience of past seasons it is probable that the employment o* about 1000 men will be necessary. The programme thus briefly outlined will absorb approximately 20,000,000 trees, which will of .course be drawn from State nurseries."
