COOKS TO MAN SHIPS
HOLD-UP ENDED
CONFERENCE IN JULY
SEAMEN, COOKS, AND COMPANY
The local shipping hokl-up ended late yesterday afternoon after an agreement had been readied to hold a full conference some time in July to discuss wages and other matters. The. parties to be represented at the conference arethe Union Steam Ship Company, the Seamen's Union, and the Cooks' and Stewards' Union.
The first vessel to be manned and leave port was the AVainiarino last night. The cook, who had absented himself owing to sickness in his family, was re-engaged, and the vessel sailed for Auckland.
The Kaimai . and Kiwitea, and the Maori, which was to have replaced the Wahine in the Lyttelton run earlier ia the mouth, are expected to be reconimissioned shortly^
The E.M.S. Makura it is understood is to make a trip in the intercolonial service before she re-enters the San Francisco mail service,' leaving AVcl■lington on July 10, but no definite sailing date has been fixed.
The Monowai and Maunganui are at present undergoing overhaul and survey at Wellington. The Monowai is, on her present schedule, to resume running in the intercolonial service, leaving Wellington on August 10 for Sydney, while the Maunganui's next trip to San Francisco will be from Wellington on August 7.
The Cooks' and Stewards' Union has agreed to man all vessels which were affected by the dispute.
Following a conference of the parties on Tuesday, proposals were submitted to a meeting of the Cooks' and Stewards' Union yesterday afternoon, and were accepted.
The following statement was issued by the secretary of the Cooks and Stewards' Union (Mr. E. Kennedy):— "Following on a conference with the managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Limited (Mr. IST. S.. Falla), the Cooks and Stewards' Union has agreed to man the Makura and other vessels at present requiring providore hands. It has been further arranged that a joint conference with representatives of the Cooks and Stewards' Union and tho Seamen's Union will be held at a date in July to be"mutually arranged to discuss the question of wages and other matters concerned."
