EX-PUPILS MEET
I CLYDE QUAY SCHOOL
A happy function, was -held last evening at the Elizabeth Street School when ,ex,seliolars of the Clyde Quay School 'met at a reunion organised by the committee of tie Ex-Pupils' Assoeiatfon.
There \vas a representative attendance of old pupils, dating from the opening year, 1889, down to more recent times, and also a number of teachers, school committee members, and others interested in • the schools The. first headmaster (Mr. W. T. Grundy) attended, while among others present were Mr. W. H. Phillips, chairma^ of the, sahool committee, Mr. T. Forsyth, chairman of the Education Board and a member of the school committee for thirty lyears, and Mr. H. E- Fisher, first assistant teacher. Apologies for absence were received from Mr. Rogers, the present headmaster, and Mr.' E. W. Kellow, president of the association.;
Mr. 11.I1. iWiltbn, who presided, expressed tho pleasure which all felt in being able-to greet Mr. Grundy in his retirement after filling the position of headmaster during; the first twenty-seven veal's- of the school's history, and said he hoped that-Mr. Grundy would grace the.-occasion of the school jubilee, which was due in a few years. Mr. 'Grundy, who ' was received with applause,,*; spoke interestingly of his active -.flays and thanked the schbol committee and the Ex-Pupils' Association for', many considerations extended to him-.iri his retirement. • An excellent programme arranged by Mrs. Mnrtin. Williams, an old pupil of the, school, was presented, those taking part'being Mrs.: Fellowes, Misses Sarah Walker', jiiid Sybil Williams (sketches), and' Mr:* George Gray (song's). Mrs. 0. McDonald was accompanist.. A one-act pl'ay'as a concluding item was presented by Mrs. Pellowes, Mts. Pedersen, Misses Joan Kennedy and Sarah Walker, and Messrs. Mick' Kennedy and Hugh Williams.,; ■<.
After, supper. reminiscences of early schooldays were recalled by the Rev. J. TV Martin arid Mr. A. Duncan. Mr. Fisher referred to ; the splendid spirit of the school and the co-operation of the- parents with the teaching-staff. Several new members joined as life members/of .the association.
The success of the evening reflected credit on the organising work of the committee, particularly that of Miss M. A. Phillips, the honorary secretary of the association, and Mesdames Turner and Browii. whorshouldercd the responsibility .:of the supper arrangements.
