DEAN INGE RETIRING

SUCCESSOR AT ST. PAUL'S

LONDON, June 19.

The Very Rev. Walter Robert Matthews, Dean of Exeter, lias bceuappointed to succeed the Very Eev. AY. R. Inge as Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral on October 2. Dean Ingo a yearj ago intimated his intention of retiring in the summer of 1934, the "News of the World" stating that the reason was becauso of his advancing years. Dean Inge is now 74 years of age. The Very Rev. W. B. Matthews -was born in 1881, and educated at King's College, London. He is a fellow of King's College, a member of the senate of the University of London, and honorary professor of the Philosophy of Religion at the University College of the South-West of England, Exeter. Other appointments which he has held include: Assistant chaplain, Magdalen Hospital; lecturer in philosophy, King's College, 1908-18, also in dogmatic theology, 1909-18; dean of King's College and professor of tho Philosophy of Religion, 1918-32; and chaplain to the King, 1923-31. He was Boylo lecturer in 1020-22,-White lecturer 1927, Xoble lecturer 1928, and Wilde lecturer 1929. He has written a number of books on religious subjects.
