THEFT OF ELECTRICITY
RELIEF WORKER PLEADS
' GUILTY
Pleading guilty to a charge of stealing electricity valued at 12s, the property of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board, William Ernest Cook appeared bofore Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Lower Hutt Court today. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of tampering with electric lines, not being an employee of tho Power Board.
Sergeant J. W. McHolm said Cook put in a shunt which allowed electricity to bo used without passing through the meter. " The defendant estimated the value of the'electricity ho had used illegally as 4s. He was a married man and had been on relief work for two years. Ho had no money. The case was brought by the Power Board as a warning to others who might be disposed to steal electricity.
The Magistrate said Cook was in straitened circumstances, and ordered him to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months. Cook was ordered to repay tho 12s within a month and to pay the costs of tho case.
