WINDY WEATHER
A WESTERLY DEPRESSION
The fact that an intense westerly depression is now crossing the Dominion accounts for the somewhat unpleasant reading made by the weather forecast issued at noon today. Strong northerly to westerly winds, which in'places will reach gal© force, will prevail south of New Plymouth and East Cape, winds to the north of those points being more moderate in strength. A general change to southerlies, however, can be expected within the next twenty-four hours. Unsettled and squally weather is predicted, with rain south' of New Plymouth and East Cape. In the South Island some heavy falls are probable. Temperatures will be becoming colder and snow is probable ori the ranges, and there is also a probability of hail on the East Coast.
Owing to the depression, northwesterly winds since last' night have been strong, and gale force has been reached about. Cook Strait. By this morning, however, a southerly change had advanced up the east coast as far north as Timaru. Bain has fallen in the western and southern districts, of the South Island, and this mornjmg it was raining along parts of the east coast of the South Island.' Over most of the North Island; .'however, the weather has continued to he fair, although at 9 a.m. today conditions-had become cloudy and threatening in western districts, especially from Taranaki southward. Temperatures have- been mild.
Auckland has had a continuance of fine and sunny.weather with very little wind. The weather there at 9 a.m. today was cloudy with / a moderate westerly wind.
Wellington had fine a"nd ■ mild weather yesterday with almost continuous sunshine. A strong northwesterly wind, however, became very boisterous last night and early this morning. There was one gust which blew at the rate of 70 miles an hour and several of a velocity of over 60 miles ah hour. Condition's this morning were' dull and threatening, a northwesterly gale still prevailing. Christchurch had mild and pleasant weather yesterday with a light wind from the. north. It was sunny until 2 p.m., when skies clouded oven The weather this morning was dull with a fresh north-westerly -wind. Dunedin had fair-and mild weather with a light north-westerly wind. Some rain fell there last night and it was still raining this moaning, the wind having changed to • the south-west.
