RAILWAY BOOKSfALLERS
"Taxpayer" writes to the Editor of "The Post" attacking V State Socialism" and the Government's attitude to private enterprise. Inter alia, he says:—The latest move of the Governs ment is to enter tho retail book trade by takings over all the railway .bookstalls which appear to it to be making a profit. These, bookstalls have pre: viously been operated by private enterprise. There will shortly be two classes of people, civil servants and those working on the dole to keep them. The following reply was made' when tho matter was referred to the Bailw.ay Departnient:-^The Bailway Department is takings over certain bookstalls on railway stations where such action is found advisable in.connection with the general business of the. Department. Where bookstalls have already been taken over, the Bailways Board-has found that not only has the-service to the pnblie been improved, but the financial returns to the Department have been higher than when the bookstall rights were leased to contractors.
