EASTERLY'S WIN
HIGH GRADER UNLUCKY
HURDLES AT ..WANGANUI
■ Lnder much more pleasant conditions than on the opening day, the Wanganui Jockey Olub's Winter Meeting was brougnfc to", a.' successful conclusion on baturclay. The course was in, excellent order. . '
High Grader was a pronounced favourite for the May Hurdles, but lie failed ■by a head to catch .basteriy (to whom he conceded about three lengths start) two luriongs iroin, home. Consent and Count Lendrort' set the early pace, and they were together passing the stands the first time, running clear trom High Grader, Invictus, Million, Irue Shaft, .easterly; Stanchion; Jaysqn; -High i'aluiin', Hounslow and Constant timi. Consent, Count Lendroff, Hick urader, and Million were bunched-at tne hurdle,at the live furlongs, where Easterly and Invictus'were right up. Crossing the top Easterly ran to the front, and she was followed into the straight by High Grader, Count Lendroff, Jaysou, and Million.- At the final fence, which was practically flattened, .Easterly and High Grader were together, the former bein<* quicker to get away, but High /Grader finished very strongly and got to within a head of Easterly. Half a dozen lengths away was Invictus, who was followed by Constant Sun, Count Lendroff, Stanchion, High' EalutinV and Million, with the others-a long-way in the rear. Easterly was better served in the running on this occasion, but her rider nearly paid for his impetuosity in going to the front a bit early, but actually it was this, aided by her quick jumping over the fallen last fence, that gave her the final advantage. . High Grader had to be hard ridden to keep up with his field, which was something unusual for - him, and in all he gave Eennie a stiff task throughout. Jayson ran a fine race, and came from well back after being outside several horses in the final half-mile; he may win a good hurdle event this -winter. Invictus again

went a good race after losing his position in the middle stages, and Constant Sun came from well back to finish fifth, givin" a fine showing. Stanchion went only a fair race, but Million failed to run up to her. first day's form, although she was not ridden out when it was obvious that she had no chance. Hounslow- was nearly down at the third hurdle, opposite the stand,, and this caused him to drop rightout of the. running. It was not purely a.bad jump, but he was probably'jammed on the rails, which would account for his -mistake. The southerner would probably perform _ better on bigger : courses than the turning circuit at Wanganui.
