The first direct shipment to Auckland Of Cook Island oranges for the season arrived by tho Waikawa this week. All tho eases were carried on deck, and there was not moro than'l per cent, of bad fruit, whereas in tho past, with fruit carried in the holds of tho vessels, it was not uncommon for 40 per cent, to bo bad on arrival. The shipment,, which comprised 7500 cases, was from tho islands of Aitutaki and Mangaia. Tho fruit from tho latter island, which has to bo loaded from canoes while tho ship steams up and do\vn, was in especially good condition, tho .packing and grading being much more satisfactory than in recent shipments from Rarotonga, the main island of the group.
