BRUSH FENCES BEST

SOLID ONES DANGEROUS

There were no serious accidents or mishaps in this year's Grand National Steeplechase, and the only jockey to receive medical treatment, ■other than for minor scratches and bruises, was W. Hollick, the l-ideu of Parson's Well, who bruised his ribs.

It is a remarkable fact that although the fences at Aintree are regarded as the stiff-

t>st and take more jumping thau those of any other course in the world, very few or hardly any serious falls take place in connection with the world-famous race. The death roll of riders and horses at Fleniington is ten times more than what has occurred in the whole history of the English Grand National Steeplechase.

There is no doubt that the solid fences at Flemington are much more dangerous thau the brush arid hedge fences at Aintree. There is no more spectacular course in the world than Aintree, and yet Flemington 'has a list of disasters that completely dwarfs the English course in that respect. It thus seems clear that a fall over a solid fence is apt to lead. to far more serious results than when a horse falls at a brush fence.

The solid fence sometimes makes a horse somersault on top of his rider, whereas impact with a brush or hedge is followed

by a certain amount of. give, and so softens the fall. Some riders prefer solid fences, but. the long history of Aintree, comparatively free from serious accident and falls,'shows that it lacks nothing in spectacular steeplechasing, and hence from""every point of view is much more preferable than a race over solid fences.
