The New Zealand ■Council: has approved of August 25 as the date for tho New Zealand cross-country championship, to. be held at Dunedin.

J. E. Perston had his first run of the season last Saturday, when he.gave the new members some useful hints on hill work and conserving of energy: whereever possible. ._ . .

The annual contest for the Benson "Gate" between the Masterton and Wanganui harriers is to be run at Masterton on June 12. The race is a teams' event with the first twelve men home in each club to count. Wanganui are the present holders of tho trophy. The Masterton Club, has two promising novices. D. Talbot is running close to his brother, Charlie, who is the present club champion. A. Gannon is a strong runner and will be a valuable team member.

Auckland has. had many fine athletes -on the track during the summer season. . among them some well-known harriers. I W. Savidan is still the same tireless distance runner. N. F. Cooper, a popular member of the Auckland harrier representatives, -was unfortunate in spraining his ankle at an awkward time. Had he been able to continue training for the Australian visit, his performance would no doubt have been favourable to his inclusion in tho Empire Games team. P. Watt, the outstanding junior distance runner, is a brother to W. Watt, of the Olympic Club, but it is unlikely that he will take to crosscountry running. _ Tho Northern, Boslyn, and Leith Clubs m Duncdin held the first of a series of annual combined runs last Saturday, when the Northern and Hoslyn Clubs were the guests of the Leith Club. Some 50 members were divided into two packs, led by Anderson (Leith) and McKinley (Northern). The Calliope Club, Auckland, has some record-breakers this season. W. Charman created a course record during the novice race recently, but was not to hold it for long, as in the veterans' handicap on the same day A. Clow bettered the record-
