WOMEN TEACHERS
GRADING QUESTIONS
DOMINION ASSOCIATION
Grading and other important questions affecting the profession were discussed at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Women Teachers' Association, which was held today. The president (Miss E. Andrews) was in the chair, and delegates were present from branches throughout tho Dominion. The conference reaffirmed the principlo that senior women in 2a positions should be placed in tho No. 4 grading group. Other remits passed included the following:— ■■ That the position of senior women assistants in the upper part of schools of grades 6c and 7 be grade 3. That the £30 special allowance previously paid to senior "women teachers has been unjustly withdrawn, as it was virtually part of tho salary. That junior teachers under the rationing scheme be admitted as full members of the association on payment of Is subscription. That as handwork is a compulsory subject in our schools, adequate supplies be given to all departments. That the present basis of staffing is proving inequitable and unjust in its incidence when schools fall in grade. , That in the interests of the welfare of the children of New Zealand the clause forbidding enrolment of ths child before the age of six be repealed.
That in all primary, mixed intermediate, combined technical and intermediate, technical, and secondary schools where there are large numbers of adolescent girls, there should be a senior mistress ivith salary and status commensurate with her responsibility in the interests of the girls. That the W.T.A. press for the restoration of Government grants to all kindergartens controlled by recognised authorities.
That the W.T.A. press for the amendment of the Education Act.so that in the reorganisation of educational facilities the status of any teacher -will not be detrimentally affected.
