THE MINOR EVENTS

Backers started off badly in the opening event when the locally-trained Alcides won the Trial Hack Handicap at double figures. Lady Cheval was slo^v away. De Trop, on the rails, hopped out very smartly to lead from Tudor, Lao Colossus, Alcides, Full Throttle, Kaola, Snowball, and Indefinite, while Argument had tailed off as they swept into the back stretch. At the half-mile De Trop was two lengths clear of Tudor, Leo Colossus, Alcides, and Snowball, but at the three furlongs Leo Colossus ran round the field, with Tudor following, and this pair were first into the home stretch, from' De Trop (dropping back), Snowball, Alcides and Full Throttle. Over the last half-fur-long Alcides joined issue with the leaders and he won well going away by a length from Snowball, with a couple of lengths back to Leo Colossus and Tudor T.ie next to arrive were Full Throttle and Argument, with a gap back to De ■Trap and Indefinite.

Alcides won in very promising fashion and looks like going on to better things. Ha is a four-year-nld by Pombal from Admyra by Solferino, who was also a good performer for Mr. L. G Paul The winner is a half-brother to Alloway and All Supreme. Snowball and Leo Colossus were both forced to cover extra ground and Argument was ckse up, after being right out of the contest early. Tudor showed surprising speed for a jumper, and lie looks in great order for hurdling this winter.

lhe Balgownie Hack Handicap was a very fine race, with more horses than.was expected fighting out a good finish. Rust and Werohia were only slightly better backed than the Jayson-Red Riifun bracket, Nightguard, Gay Court, and Taitoru, with the ultimate winner Weat Tor at double figures. When the barrier went up half-a-dozen horses did. not get away well Matorni and Boon were the first off, leading out of the straight from Boudoir, Tea Garden, Taitoru, Werohia, Te Rangitumau, Gay Court, arid West Tor, with Nightguard, Headmistress, and Red Rufus at the tail of the field. Into the back stretch Tea Garden ran up on tVe outside of Boon and following this pahpast the five furlongs were Werohia, Matorni, Boudoir, Te Rangitumau, Gay Court, Taitoru, West Tor, Tres Sec, Red Rufus, and Rust. There was a rapid change of positions, as the field swept .across the top, Red R.ufus going fast.fou'ml the field and leading into the straightTfrdm Beu'i doir, Matorni, Werohia (on 'the rails); Gay Court, Boon, and West Tor. Just on the actual turn for home Werohia'wag pulled .out from the rails and soon' caught the leaders. West Tor ranged up on the outside and the pair fought out a hard finish, with West Tor asserting himself to win by a head. There was a bunch fighting out the minor placing, which" went to Red Rufus, over Boudoir, Headmistress, Matorni, Rust, Tres Sec, and Gay Court, all. of whom were close i.p, with a gap bark to Te Rangitumau, Boon, and Taitoru. It seemed as if Werohia might have won had he been as vigorously ridden at the finish as was the winner, but the latter won really well. Red Rufus gave a fine display. There were several horses that could be termed unlucky. These were Headmistress, Rust, Xres Sec, and Gay Court. , Nightguard could never get an opening. Taitoru wanted the race. .The final race of the day, tlje Borough' Hack Handicap, was run in the gathering gloom and it was difficult to pick up the colours of the runners. Gay Seton was a,bi(; better backed than Pladie. with a good drop in the figures to Money, grau. Racing o\it of the barrier Cnwbeen, Grumpy, Moneygran, Pladie, Gay Seton, and Arena were in close order, the field stringing out quickly. There was little change at the half-mile, but crossing the top . Grumpy dropped back and Moneygran ran up alongside Cawboen, this pair turning for home just clear 'of Grumpy and Gay Seton. At the half-dis-tance Cawbeen and Moneygran Were fighting it out, iwith Gay Seton making his effort, ,but it did not look as'if the favourite would get up. However, Reed lifted'him along, in the last few strides and he won by half a head from Cawbeen, with Lady Ronald and Moneygran a neckaway, after whom came Bon Rapide, Aranline, Waipiro, Arena, and Moatoa. Vigorous riding told at. the finish, but all the same it was a splendid effort on the part of Gay Seton, who was. patiently ridden in the early part. Once he obtained a position Cawbeen was made a. lot of use of and Moneygran showed all his pace. Lady Ronald camo from a fair way back to get third, and Bon Rapide was closer at the finish than at any stage.
