A HARBOUR PIPE LINE

The final stage of linking Auckland City andj northern shores of the harbour by the pipe, line which is to provide a new water supply for the borough of Birkenhead was commenced yesterday morning, states the "Auckland Star." If weather conditions continued favourable the task will be completed -within a day or two. It was originally intended that the whole operation should be. completed in one stage, but the preliminary work occupied longer than anticipated, and it was found necessary" to postpone the final operations . until the .next low tide. When finally dropped into position the pipes, which on the city side of the harbour run roughly parallel with the Point Chevalier Reef, will join up with the land mains at Birkenhead at a point a short distance west of 'Kauri Point. The harbour crossing of the line is approximately two miles in length, the routo from tlie Waitakere main at the Western Springs, to the Birkenhead reservoir being -four and three-quarter miles. Tho half-mile of pipo line which it;.was hoped would, be sunk in position yesterday was the- third and filial section of the trans-harbour link, and is the section which has presented the greatest difficulties to the engineers, as it has to be put down in deep water, and when laid-on the bed of the harbour will be subjected to tlio strong' tidal cross-currents which sweep past Kauri Point.
