N.Z. INSURANCE INSTITUTE
The first meeting of the. 1934 session of the New Zealand Insurance Institute was held in the Dominion Farmers' Institute recently, when the president, Mr. H. P. Hopkins, delivered an address on insurance topics.
Last year only four candidates secured the degree in the life branch, three of whom were members of the institute. They were Messrs. D. _M. Hay and W. X. Marshall, of Wellington, and Mr. C. A. Blazey, .secretary of the CUristchurch centre. Diplomas were presented to Messrs. Hay and Marshall and Part 1 certificates to' Messrs'. C. S. Clark, M. C Hill,1 H: 'N. Potter, and R. M. Wood! Mr. Hopkins ;stated that fyom the number of candidates who had entered for this year's examinations and the zeal with which they had commenced their studies, he had no doubt that their successes would be even greater than before. Sub-centres had been formed at Christchurch, Dunedin, and Napier, and steps were being, taken to start- one in Auckland. The need for technical training in insurance was ever present, and the examinations supplied the stimulus for this training. The membership now totalled 572, comprising 268 life office members and 304 representing fire and accident insurance, an increase of 78 this session.
The principal speakers of the evening were Messrs. C. M. Martin (A.M.P.), A. J. Hyder (Union Assurance), R. H. Rowland (Phoenix), L. Monkman (Yorkshire), W. R. Saunders (Commercial) V. M. Edgar (National), W. A. Parton (Northern), H. J. Tewsley (Ocean), L G. Petrie, J. I. Thodey, and W. T. Nelson. At the conclusion of the meeting light refreshments were served.
