SPECIAL MATCHES
PLAYERS ON TRIAL
SATURDAY'S PLAY
Although the season is not to open until Saturday week at the earliest, the local Rugby football clubs are already getting well under way. ■ Special matches are an important part of the preparations for the season's championship competitions, and of these quite a number took place on Saturday afternoon, the proceeds going to the club gymnasium funds. The matches were treated purely as trials, and in most cases the teams underwent a change at half-lime. Some excellent lirst-of-season form was revealed in one or two of the matches, while in others the play was of the type to be expected from teams which are only in the process of being built up. Hutt registered a particularly impressive performance against ■ Oriental, and are vo bo accepted right away as a strong combination. Athletic also went well in their match with Poneke. In the PetoneEastbourne match there* was no indication of a changed back formation being adopted, and ' apparently nothing definite has been decided upon in that direction, though it is likely that some experimental work will be clone with a view to getting better results than was the case last year, when Petone did not make the most of the, amount of ball which came from the scrummage. These teams, Eastbourne and Petone, put up quite a good showing, as did Berhampore in their match with Marist, the two games being drawn. The main results on Saturday were:— Hutt 32, Oriental 3. Athletic A 16, Pqiieke A 3. Eastbourne 6, Petone G. • - Berhampore 9, Marist 9. Athletic B 3, Poneke B 0. Hutt B 8, Oriental B 3.
