FATAL SLIMMING
USE OF NITRO-PHENOL DRUGS
DEATHS OF GIRLS IN BRITAIN
LONDON, April 6,
Several recent deaths of girls owing to "slimming" by the use of drugs of the nitro-phenol group have caused wholesale chemists to petition the Home Office to place such drugs on the poison list, to be supplied only by a doctor's prescription. Doctors say that apart from the risk of death through an overdose, a knowledge of the effect of these remedies is little known. Medical men use the greatest caution when prescribing them. *
One of the recent victims of nitrophenol poisoning was the former New Zealandcr Miss Philcox. After an inquiry into the cause of her death, the Coroner returned a verdict that death was due to nitro-pheuol poisoning as the result of misadventure. He gave a serious warning against the use of drugs for slimming. Tho evidence showed that Miss Philcox, under medical advice, took nitro-phenol capsules, and, finding that they were not having the desired effect, took an increased dose without consulting the doctor.
