OBITUARY
BRIGADIER E. J. NEWBOLD
The sudden death of Brigadier E. J. Newbold, one of the oldest early-day Salvation Army officers, occurred yesterday at his residence at Worser Bay. Some, two years ago Brigadier Newbold retired from active service in. the Salvation Army/ after some forty-eight years of valued work. As a young Salvationist ho had a prominent: share in pioneering the work in many centres in Now Zealand, ;riid was associated with the first officers of the Salvation Army in this country. His comrades have* been delighted many times by his reminiscences of the'journeys by stage coach on the West Coast over rough mountain trails; also he would relate many stories of early battles, .when the "Skeleton Army" hurled its ammunition of rotten eggs at the Salvationists marching by. Following a number of field appointments, Brigadier Newbold was transferred for a time to the Melbourne headquarters, later becoming accountant in the headquarters at Adelaide and Sydney. Returning to Now Zealand, he was appointed p assist in the property office, later undertaking, duties as cashier in the national headquarters, from which position he retired eleven years later. The late brigadier formed ■an integral part in the history of the New Zealand Salvation Army, and his genial, true Salvationism and the work ho did will cause him to bo remombercdi He leaves a widow and one son.
Commissioner Cunningham will conduct the funeral service at the Weilingto* Citadel at 2 p.m. tomorrow, and lie will bo supported by officers and soldiery from the, South Wellington'and surrounding corps.
