GUIDE'S NARROW ESCAPE

CHEISTCHURCH, This Day

A thrilling incident occurred during the retreat from an attempt to cross Fyffe's Pass from the Mueller Glacier to the Landsborough Valley, undertaken by Messrs. A. J. Scott (Christchurch) and D. W. Foster (Wellington), who were accompanied by Guide Vie Williams, of tho Mount Cook Hermitage. Guide Williams had a narrow escape when the upper lip of the schrund broke away as ho was cutting steps in tho ice above it. The party was on the ice slope, and as all were roped together, nothing could have saved the! others if the leader had been swept down.
