FIRE ALARMS FOR HOUGHTON BAY
Correspondence received from the secretary of the H.oughton Valley Progressive Association regarding the provision of fire alarms in the district, together with a letter from tho Post and Telegraph Department, was tabled at today's meeting of the Wellington Fire Board. The letter from the Telegraph Department stated it was regretted that the Department could not agree to the fixing of notices on the residences of subscribers. Tho question of tho installation at Ohiro Bay of a public call offico (coin-in-the-slot type) had been fully investigated, but it was regretted that at present the revenue would bo insufficient to cover working expenses. It was pointed out by the secretary of tho Houghton Valley Progressive: Association, in one letter, that the nearest fire alarms were at Lyall Bay and Island Bay. The chairman of the Fire Board, Mr. N. W. Nelson, said that the superintendent was of the opinion that tho population of tho district did not warrant the expense. . Tho board could only be guided by the superintendent.
