ALLEGED TAX EVASION
PROCEEDINGS ANNOUNCED
PROMINENT PERSONS
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph— Copyright. WASHINGTON, March 10. The Attorney-General, ~~ Mr. H. S. Cummings, tonight announced that proceedings against a former Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. A. W. Mellon, Mr. James J. Walker, former Mayor of New York, Mr. Thomas Lamont, partner in J. P. Morgan and Company, and Mr. Thomas Sidle, a noted Cleveland lawyer and partner of a former Secretary for War, Mr. N. D. Baker, for alleged tax evasion, would be presented to grand juries soon. The newly-created tax division/ of the Department of Justice has also announced that other cases of a similar nature are pending against other individuals. The case against Mr. Mellon, it is understood, has been under investigation for some time.
