EIGHT-OAR ROWING
INTER-CLUB RACES
An- inter-club event of considerable interest to rowers took place on Saturday afternoon when representatives of the Star, Wellington, and Petone Clubs participated in an eight-oar contest. Each club entered one crew, but the Petone Club, by reasou of the fact that it won the Mothes Shield this year, was permitted to enter a No. 2 crew. The Petone No. 1 crew was the crew provisionally selected to represent Wellington in the interprovincial Eight-Oar Championship, which is to be rowed here on Easter Saturday, March 31.' ' - Against the provincial crew . were matched the.'-most prominent members of the town clubs. The Star Club boated a strong crew. comprising G. C. Cooke (str.), F. H. Mullins, S. I. Kidd, B. Webb, J. I. Thodey, E. L. Hutchens, R. W. Williams, and R. Rees (bow). This crew met the provincial, or Petone No. 1 crew, comprising B. Crane (str.), A. Hope, A. Abrim, G. Crabtree, W. Lind, R. Pritchard, D. Mcßride, and C. Bishop, in the first heat. The water was fairly smooth, but both crews were troubled by gusts of wind soon after the start. Under these circumstances the blade work.of the Star crew showed to advantage. Rowing a slightly faster and longer stroke, the Star crew obtained a slight lead soon after the start, and this was maintained throughout the race. Both boats kept close together and there was little variation in their position until about 100 yards from the finishing mark. Cooke then whipped up his crew to a faster stroke, enabling Star to win by a canvas. The defeat of the provincial crew although disappointing was not altogether unexpected. In the second heat Wellington drew* the outside position and fell behind soon after the start. The crew was unable to make any impression on the Petone No. 2 crew, and continued to drop back Steadily throughout the race. Petone Won comfortably ; by one and three-quarter lengths. The crews in this heat were:— Petone No. 2: 0. Clayton (str.), C Gimblett, K. Boswell, R. Gardiner, D Gane, P. Abbott, L. Home, and B. Rigby Wellington: W. Bracken (str.) W. McLean, R. Tregurtha, J. Luke, k. Spoor, R. Redding, V. Morris, and T. Lancaster. -, Petone No. 2 and Star both got a good s™, m the final, hut the former crew pulled to the front early in the race. Petone had rowed an exceptionally good race against Wellington, and although it was apparent that it had not then been fully _ extended it was not generally thought that it would maintain the lead which it secured from Star. Instead of »°! ln? t.s advan*age Petone increased it. At half-way Cooke made an efiort *o overtake Petone, but after a few more yards had been . covered Star again dropped back. Petone won by two lengths. V
