WAIKATO MEETING
VERCOE TO JONATHAN
L'ALLEGRO THE SPRINT
(From "Early Bird.") HAMILTON, March 10. A fine performance was recorded by Sunny Downs in the Ohinewai Handicap, for which he was favourite. He had only three horses behind him at the home turn; and then when he did make a move' he was stopped twice. Finally he got clear, aud over the last bit he swamped the field, to beat Campanero (who had four lengths' lead at. the bottom of .the straight) handsomely. Curlew, at solid odds, was a good f- isro a? d Foreiga Money, Wynne's Deugat, Calcutta, and Englishman headed the remainder. - . Callamart was a surprise favourite m the Eaglan Hurdles, but Cruachan,' at fine odds, scored a popular win. This pair were at the tail of the field in the early stages but they both went up fast to take the lead at six furlongs, Unoco going with them, and this trio were clear at the home turn from Mia Stella and Lucess. The first three jumped the last nurdle on terms, and Cruachan did his best to beat Callamart by a length, while Lucess finished on to take third place. Unoco, Mia Stella, and Ruby Meteor followed. Brown Abbey jumped very badly. bolanum prevailed in the Te Rore Hack Handicap after being last away. Solomon made the pace early, but Espoir headed him and led round the home turn from bolomon, Gay Rose, Coronis. Roman Mascot and Arawa Rose. Over the last Uit ibolarmm did his best to beat easily the consistent Roman Mascot, with Arawa Kose finishing fast on the outside. Nest were ivanapa, Solomon, Royal Secret, Gay Rose, and Phiakuo, The winner is a good sort and seems.to' Tie improving in barrier manners. Solomon bored out badly in the straight, but for which height have finished in the money. Jonathan, at odds on, won the Vercoe Handicap, but he was stopping at the end. Boughal had a four lengths' lead at the nali-nuJe, where Jonathan set out after him, and there was only" a length separating, them at the home turn, with lung's Archer, Royal Artist, and Limex tollowmg. Jonathan was in charge at the distance, and under the whip from here he won by three parts of a length from iiing March,* Limes, Prolyxo, and Boughal. • AwlJ^ 3l^? st,» ; with Royal Artist King's Archer, and Gibraltar, next to finish. .Jonathan responded gamely when tackled. King ) March, was giving the leaders ten lengths > start at the home -turn and he finished very fast. He looked like a cood thing beaten. '-_.■•■ Limes was set to meet Prolyxoon the samo terms as on the first day, and carrying a couple.of pounds overweight, he again, beat.her.' > Boughal showed great pace but was be.? T te, n,a quarter of a mile from home. He will have, to do better than thi3 in .the thompson Handicap. KingJs Archer and Royal Artist both disappointed. Namakia tried to win the Eureka Handicap all the way, but Royal Appellant joined her at the distance and beat her easily. The iwinner met Namakia at the liberal - concession of 91b for defeat into second place on the first day and that was sufficient to turn the tables. SALT SPRAY AN EASY WIN. Salt Spray showed considerable improvement to win the Rangiriri1 Highweight; Brown «Lap and Tuaheahe ran themselves out m front,.and were done with at the distance; where Salt Spray took charge and went;on .to. win very easily .by four lengths. . Jalldy Karo finished well, and u-ing Win also stayed better than oh the «st<lay. Tuaheahe andißrown Lap were next. £>alt_ Spray .won very easily indeed, and^his nder was taking no risks of another dead heat. * .■■'■■•'•■■■ i_Tbeyewas a rare setback in the-EKirig Handicap, when the odds-on favourite btar Artist succumbed to the lightlyfancied L'AUegro, but there was a contributory factor in the filly's defeat. She and Lucidus led to the straight, and the latter, m tiring, hampered Star Artist and prevented her getting clear. L'AUegro got a clear run and he beat Star Artist rather comfortably. Sinkihg Fund and Lucidus were both close'up. The favourite was very unlucky. D'Artagnan, favourite for the Huntly Hack Handicap, was hung up in the tapes, and the field had gone a furlong betore he got clear. Oriel was handy at the home turn, and he got to the front at the distance, where Hunting Bag appeared on the scene and King Musk was also _ dinS hls Pace- They finished in this order, Oriel hanging on splendidly to win by half a length. Allegretto, King Mestor, and Miss Rewa followed. The course" was in good order after overnight ram. The totalisator handled £18,755 10s against £18,204 on the second day last year, making £33,543. for the meetinz, against £32,852 10s last year. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
