Tho Rossi-Forel scaW used for indicating tho intensity of earthquakes, is as, follows:—, • (1) .Shock felt by ah experienced observer. (2) •Extremely feeble shock; felt by a number of persons at rest.' "■ ' (3) Very fecblo shock, felt by several persons at rest; strong enough for direction or duration to be appreciable. (4) Feeble shock; felt by several persons in motion; disturbances of movable objects, doors, windows; creaking of floors. . (5) Shock of moderate intensity, felt generally by everyone; disturbance of furniture, beds, etc.; ringing of some bells. (6) Fairly strong shock; general awakening of those asleep; general ringing of bells; oscillation of chandeliers; stopping of clocks; visible disturbance of trees and shrubs; some startled persons leave their, dwellings. (7) Strong shock; overthrow of movable objects; fall of plaster; ringing of church bolls; general panic, without damage to buildings. ' (8) Very strong shock; fall of chimneys; cracks in walls of buildings. (9) Extremely strong shock, 'partial or total destruction of some' buildings. (10) Shock of extreme intensity; great disaster; buildings ruined; disturbance of strata; fissures in the ground; rockfalls.from mountains.
101; Deputy-President H. R. Hunt (Suburbs), 100. Sixteen men took ten shillings each, including D. Rankin (Karori). Deputy President H. V. Croxton (Karori), last year's Belt -winner, and P. Goldfinch (Karori). Wakefield and- Goldfinch tied with 47 each in the C.I. Cup competition for the highest score in tho snapshooting, and will fire off tomorrow. Tho highest tcnm score in the rapidshooting competition was that of Auckland, City No. 2—138 points., The team comprised G. G. Kelly, 39; A. G. Robortson, 25; R, C. Russell, 31; R. Parkinson, 43. Petone No. 1 and Auckland City No, 1 were second equal with I37..noints.
