COUNTRY DAMAGE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) MASTBKTON, This Day. A number of Queen Street business premises suffered fairly extensivo damago from the earthquake, and in. places footpaths were littered with broken glass and fragments of brickwork. In Queen Street, over thirty plate-glass windows were broken. Buildings were badly cracked in a number of instances, while in the rear portions of a number of premises the brickwork came away. Portion of the rear part of the Opera House came down, and the Post Office ".lock was damaged. Parts of the residential area escaped damage, but in others chimneys collapsed and household articles were, scattered in all directions. At To Ore Ore, Wangachu, and towards the east coast the damage is Eairly heavy, chimneys being' down in all directions. In some areas conditions were worse through the electric light, failing. Many of the shops in Masterton make a scene of destruction, owing to stock having been violently flung down. In one street in Masterton there arc over ten chimneys down. Cracks opened in roads. At 9.3 a.m. today another slight but pronounced shake was felt.
