LABOURING HEAVILY

BYRD'S BEAR IN BIG SEAS

CREW HAVING ROUGH TIME

1 MONTREAL, March 5. A message from members of the' Byrd Expedition aboard the Bear of Oakland gives her noon position as 67deg 15min south, 178deg 55min west. She has been forced to reduce speed, in mountainous seas. The ship is labouring heavily, and rolling dangerously, fifty degrees to each side. No mess tables have been set for three days, and it has been too rough for them, to hold the dishes. Men have frequently been thrown' from their bunks, hence all hands are remaining awake, clustered in groups and hanging on to any fittings available to prevent injury.
