AN ISLAND MYSTERY
UNIDENTIFIED. CRAFT
POSSIBLE SHELL POACHERS
EABAUL, March 4. William Baker, a planter in islands 200 miles west of Babaul, reports a mystery aeroplane has been sighted over, Witu; also that an unidentified i steamer has been entering unfrequented harbours. It is supposed that the ship is a mother ship for shell poachers, while the aeroplane searches for promising reefs. The planters are dependent on shellfishing owing to the collapse of the rubber market, and they complain that poachers are denuding the best reefs.
