STERLING CENTURY BY JAMES
TRICKLEBANK'S EXCEPTIONAL FIGURES
Local senior grade teams had varied experiences on Saturday ..afternoon, when the last but one of the championship series was commenced. Though the weather was fine, wickets and grounds were affected by rain which had fallen previously, and in some cases runs were very much harder to make in the earlier stages of play ■tyan later in the afternoon. This was particularly the case at the BasHußeserve, where on No. 2 wicket Wellington, the present championship leaders, Had first strike against'Kilbirnie and were dis,:missed for a.moderate score, kept down considerably by the slowness of: the outfield. Kilbirnie started off the right way in reply, and had made more than half the runs required for a win on the first innings for the loss of only one wicket. The position •in this matches such as to make the championship outlook more interesting r than ever. Institute Old Boys also fared only moderately well on |,'Wo.;rl. wicket at the Basin, Duffy being the main contributor to , their:score, and;at the end of the day Midland, with Dustin doing ; most?;of. the scoring, were well on the way to a win. The most Sf C£^^ l- Of the *?mvlers on Ac Basin v Reserve was Hanscombe, oivKilbirnie. The outstanding batting performance of the day was that given, by James for Wellington College Old Boys against Petone at Petone, where the wicket was easy. James compiled a 'fine century, and'Parsloe also gave the score a good lift. Petone, for whom Allcott and Brice bowled well, were given a good beginning, in their with the bat. First use of the Hutt Recreation Ground after its overhaul had disastrous results for the _batemen, University and Hutt both collapsing. Tricklebank was again in his element; he took six of Hutt's eight wickets for 22 :runs. Champness and Judd did best with the ball for Hutt.
