FIVE RECORDS BROKEN
AUSTRALIANS IN ACTION

Except for a cool - south-east breeze, conditions were almost perfect for the athletic sports meeting at Lancaster Park at which the visiting Australian athletes appeared. Five New Zealand records were broken, three of them by Metealfe. iT.T" ■.£• Broachvay clipped 3 seconds off the 1000 yds record,' and A. T. Anderson won the 440 hurdles in record time. Iv addition to Hampson winning the 100 yds and 220 yds, he equalled the New Zealand record in both events—9 4-o9ec and 21 4-ssee. Metcalfe's performances were outstanding. He made a new figure for the hich jump of 6ft 4 7-Bin. In the broad jump he covered 23ft 10 4-Bin, and 50ft lin in %, bop' ste P- and Jump. . Ihe mile event was .robbed of much interest by the defection of'the young Canterbury champion.. Matthews, owing to indisposition. The meeting o£ J. B. MacFarlane, New Zealand sprint champion, with Hampson roused the keenest interest, but the Australian showed he was definitely superior. He beat MacFarlane by a yard and a half in the 220 yds and by two feet in the 100 yds. following are the results of the more important events:— lOOOyda Short Handicap: T. G. Broadway (scr.), 1; H. MeCaskey (35yds), 2. }yon by a foot. Time: 2.15 1-5, a New Zealand record. • 100 yds Invitation Handicap:—T! E. Hampson, of Australia (scr.), 1; J. Carmichael (3yds), 2; J. B. MacFarlane (scr.), 3. Won by two feet, with inches between second and third. Time: 9 4-5, equalling the New Zealand record. The runners had a light breeze behind. High Jump: Metealfe, of Australia (scr.), 1; 6ft 4 7-Sin (New Zealand record). 1; L. C. Woodward (9in handicap), 6ft 2in, 2; H. Wilkins (9in), sft llin. Broad Jump: Metealfe, 23ft 10 4-oin (New Zealand' record), 1; H. Wilkins (3ft), 23ft 7in, 2; E. Moir (4ft 6in), 23ft 3!&in, 3. Mile Invitation Handicap: W. Sargison (40yc]s), 1; A. H. Wayman (40yds) •?; F. Ratclift'e (50yds),. 3. E. W. Barwick, of Australia (scr.), was fourth. Time: 4.25 4-5. 220 yds Invitation Scratch Race:Hampson, 1; MacFarlane, 2; Fitzsimmons, 3. Won by a yard and a half, with three yards between second and third. Time 21 4-5,1 New Zealand record equalled. 440 yds Invitation Hurdles: A. T. Anderson (scr.), 1; J. D. Nelligan (6yds), 2. Won easily. Time: 55 4-5, a New Zealand record. Hop, Step, and Jump: Metealfe (scr.), 1; G. M. Tiffen (6ft), 2; R. Moir (10ft), 3. Distance,'soft lin, a New Zealand record.
