ANGLICAN PULPIT

THE LIVERPOOL 1 CASE

(From "The Post's" Representative) : LONDON, January 19.

Lord Hugh Cecil,' having failed 'to get satisfaction from, the ' Bishop' of Liverpool in regard to. his petition on the matter of the appearance of two prominent ■ Unitarians in the' pulpit of Liverpool Cathedral, addressed * a letter to the. Archbishop of York.

> • The: Archbishop has now replied'to Lord Hugh Cecil. ' In ;th'e course of his letter he says:-^-- .;

' "It was clear tome from; the first that my proper course was to bring the matter before the Upper House of Convocationin" this province, 'leaving it'undecided"for' the present whether the Lower House should1 be invited,'to concur in any decision reacted by the Upper House ■or . only have this' formally communicated to theni as representing the, clergy of ;the province. The choice between these must depend^ upon the nature of the decision reached by the Upper House. \ ''■'.';■

"The reason why it was necessary that convocation,-or at least the Upper House, should be the authority invoked is provided-by the fact- tliaf convocation has passed formal resolutions referring to the admission of 'ministers not episcopally ordained' and. of 'members of Christian communions separated from the Church of England? toaddress.coiigregations :in consecrated buildings .(the text of these resolutions may be found in the; Journal ;; pf ■. the Convocation of. Xorli: recording the Groups,of Sessions of February, 1921; and 1922)., . "The question raised by, the recent occurrences in. Liverpool Cathedral and by your, petition were not then before Convocation, but the matters > then discussed .and the -conclusions/ then reached, bearing upon this 'question -so intimate, that prospect 'for Convocation- alone would have -been sufficient to lead ■me to; submit:" this matter to,its. authority.". ~,.; i•.
