NEW MARKETS
DOMINION'S NEED OPENING IN JAMAICA The need for New Zealand to develop markets in other places' than Britain was stressed by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. R. Masters) when speaking to a deputation at Marshland, Canterbury. "New Zealand," said Mr. Masters, "should not put all her eggs into one basket." He had been trying, he said, to develop ''interest in the Dominion in different pirts of the world, and he referred to'thit opportunities that were available for opening up a reciprocal trade with Jamaica. He had suggested that Mr. J. W. Collins, the representative of the Department of Industries and Commerce in Canada, should visit Jamaica to secure fuller * knowledge of the requirements of that country for New Zealand produce. That report had been received, and he thought that business men who were concerned should interest themselves in the matter. Trinidad, Barbados, and British Guiana might also be found to be a market for New Zealand produce. The Minister said they must get away from the idea that' New Zealand could produce as'much as 6he liked and send it to Great Britain to be sold. New Zealand was going to suffer in the end unless she could find new markets in countries that would trade with her. If New Zealand could buy fruit and oranges from Jamaica and persuade her to take butter and cheese and meat, then it was their duty to develop that market as much as possible.
