SETTING UP A COMMITTEE

The Eetone Borough ''Council:' last evening received a letter" froin''the lington Chamber of Coniin'efceiforwaiii ing a report in connection, with airport facilities at. or near Wellington. Itwas suggested by tha-.. Chamber of Commerce that one or two representatives from, the council,- should bo appointed to.f a committee-•Constituted from, adjacent lqcal /bodicsS. and the Wellington Chamber 'of Commerce to investigate the provision of an airport such' as may be required to cope with the present aud future development of commercial aviation services. Mayor .(ilr. D. McKenzie) said ho thought Councillor E. T. E. Hogg should be on/ the -committee, as he had brought the, proposed reclamation of Scabey Islahd«before the council. The reclamation of Seabcy Island would make about 150 acres available, and it Would bean ideal site for a seaplane base, as well as an aerodrome for a mails and passenger service. The Minister of Public>-Works (the Hon. J. Bitchener) had visitod the site, and was considering- theHwhole position. < Councillor V. A. Ndble, said tha,t this : was a matter in which the council should help in every direction possible. Petone had a^: suitable site for an aerodrome in view, but other counties also had suitable sites under consideration.^T.hey should plan for :tjie future as well as for the present.-' He congratulated the Chamber of ■ Commerce on its activity in the interests of aviation. Mr. Noble moved tHatVtW Mayor'and Councillor Hogg should fey present the council on the committee? Councilloi A. Scholelield seconded the motion, and suggested that the ;Hon. Mark Fagan, MLC, be also askjd serve on the committee. •-" .;' The Mayor mentioned the name sof Mr. W. Nash, M.P. for the district, is a commttteeman. ;'. ' Councillor Hogg_ said" that Messrs. Fagan and Nash were. busy, men/ apd they would hardly like to have th|ir time taken up with the preliminary in\ estiga.tion . ljiti weather conditions, etc., but they would'probably- like .to give their support when the > political aspect arose. - ■ ': It was agreed that the Mayor and Councillor Hogg should represent the council on the committee, i ; : ■ j
