The- rWaiwlietu '. irfc-nie and'■'■": School Association was favoured with a glorious,day for its garden fefe, held at the school on Saturday. The school grounds were in..splendid condition, and;,the gardens-were gay with,, flowers. : Much buntings was. displayed, ■arid: altogether the setting:for the fete wassa,very colotrrful one. ■• ■-■.••'-. • ' ■ ■ .. ... The various committees had been well organised, and oil the day there- was ample evidence 1 of . the preparations made by thosein charge. The fete' was opened by tho Mayor of Lower Hutt: (Mr.. J. Andrews), who was accompanied bylthe Mayoress. They were welcomed: by the president of the Home and School Association; Mr. C. Browning, who-is also tho headmaster of'the school. ;." •~, ..-■' J::, 'V.:' ; In his opening sp'eechi. the Mayor specially mentioned the efforts of- the Home and' School Association" to :, raise funds for the school and the benefit accruing to the scholars from the money thus Taised. ; Bouquets were presented to the Mayoress and to the president's wife by Miss Jean Ferguson. A splendid attraction was- the- .display provided by the decorated sections. Some eighty entrants competed for'the best and the most original-costumes, while the competition hi the' decorated bicycle and perambulator section "was .very keen, the. decorative work being" of a'very high standard.-' ' ' ■ A lengthy, spftrts programme was put through in the course of the afternoon; and proved a great- Attraction' to' all. Messrs. Eayner. and Burt -were the successful organisers of the sports. The following were the stallholders:— Produce, Messrs. Webb and Lines; ice cream and soft drinks, Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson; fancy and- sweets, Mesdames Webb and helpers;' cakes, Mesdames White, Stunneli; and Willoughby;' tea rooms, Mesdames Barnes and Eayner. Boulton's .orchestra was in attendance all the afternoon, and extra entertainment was provided by • Messrs. Pincoek. The magician, Mr. ~R. Meek, provided entertainment to young and old alike. - • '

The side-shows were tuh Tiy Messrs. 0 'Mcara, Bolter, Staples, Whiteman, and Horwell, and- did excellent business. The gross takings were £44, and the; Waiwhetu Home, and School Association had a profitable day as well as providing an interesting day for all who attended.
