The League's economic services report that'world trade figures for 1938' show that international trado was 30 per cent, lower in quantity and 50 per cent, lower in gold value than in 1929. There was' no sign of returning prosperity ■ internationally, though some countries improved their domestic activity, due to the diminution of international trade.

The, majority of countries remaining on. the gold standard kept only 35 per cent, of their 1929 trado, America retaining barely 25 per cent. Japan on a basis of national currency lost 12} per cent, of trade, and Australia only 8 per cent. .
